Old boatman Toichi lives a simple life in a little house on the riverbank. Every day, he ferries locals and strangers alike regardless of the weather. There is no other way to cross the river. As a result of industrial development, a bridge is going to be built in this remote area, beginning to cast a shadow of doubt over Toichi’s life and stir concerns about the future and his livelihood. Toichi has friends among the villagers who depend on him during their most difficult moments. Developments gain a rapid pace when the news of a brutal crime reaches the village and Toichi saves a mystery girl from the river. He names her Fu, symbolising changes and the flow of time that no one can stop. The girl’s life belongs to the river spirit, however. The film is a directing debut by Joe Odagiri who you may have seen in Room Laundering. His naturalist depiction of wildlife is in a stark contrast with minimalist acting performances. Progress does not necessarily have to mean a change for the better. The film includes appearances by Japanese film stars such as Aoi Yû and Asano Tadanobu, a new Golden Globe laureate for his supporting role in the Shogun TV series.
