The plot takes us to the city of Hakodate as we watch the destinies of three young people unfold on the backdrop of late summer. Emoto Tasuku plays the unnamed leading character who falls in love with his bookstore colleague Sachiko. She has an affair with the store manager but is not certain about the relationship at all. In a ‘gentlemanlike’ gesture, the leading character leaves initiative over to the emancipated Sachiko who goes on to push their friendship to the next level. It is good to have a partner in life when you have no steady job and live from one pay check to the next. In this case, that partner is her flatmate, Shizuo. The three go out at night to have fun and spend the little money they make between them. Due to his completely indifferent approach to work and society, life ‘bypasses’ the leading character and he leaves no perceptible traces. Each of the three central characters seeks life purpose and love with a different amount of effort. The amount of energy they invest in their endeavours will be the return they receive. Whether or not they succeed depends on them alone.
